Sally-Anne Bird is one of 10 children born to her Irish parents. She was raised in Pearcedale, Victoria. She studied in South Africa and America. She has worked as a journalist and screenwriter for the past 30 years as well as working as a sessional lecturer in journalism and public relations at Monash and RMIT universities. She has written four feature films including a biopic about the last years in the life of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, a children’s animated film, a television series and a number of children's books. She runs Kanturk Country Retreat in Langwarrin South, Victoria, Australia with her husband Gary. They have four adult children.
